After having an opportunity to participate in a workshop on your digital footprint with George Couros, what could you do to create change using social media? What would you like to see changed? How would you get the word out? Think about what you saw and talked about during the presentation. Are you inspired by anything? You will have until Spring Break to work on this project. You must create a presentation of your project in a TedTalk format, and post it on your blog. You will present your ideas to the community. And you must create a promotional poster to advertise your change.

200 Moments that Changed the World

February 6, 2013

That is culture?

What is education?

Watch the documentary “Schooling the World” by Carol Black. Take notes, while thinking about these, and the following, questions. (This video is available on Vimeo. Go to http://vimeo.com/3201259 and enter this password: STW2013. This video is only available to view until February 12, 2013.)

What is knowledge?     What is ignorance?

What is wealth?    What is poverty?

What happens when culture is lost?

Is western education sustainable? Is it working globally?

Consider the following statements from the documentary:

Education has created a sense of inferiority. The elders of cultures, their wisdom and understanding are no longer respected.

The elite train people to serve the few at the expense of the many.

Local culture, traditions, and language are a barrier to modernization. Therefore, in order for development to occur, local culture, language, and traditions must be removed.

Education helps pull people into dependence on a global economy and away from their own culture and self-respect.

“Education for all” is supported by world banks and major corporations. This is designed to develop a mainstream westernized global economy at the expense of the local self-sustained economy.

Modern education will raise people from poverty, but colonialism and development and foreign aid has created poverty.

Write a personal response to the documentary using any of the notes and statements to inspire you.

Response due Tuesday, February 12. You will also see the remaining Run Lola Run presentations and have your Literary Terms test.
